Despite living in isolation, many inhabitants of Rzeszow managed to penetrate through the famous "Iron Curtain",
These were mostly Polish emigrants, many of whom came from the city. The partner relations that link Rzeszow with Buffalo (USA),
Bielefeld (Germany), Klagenfurt (Austria), Kosice (Slovakia) and Lvov (Ukraine) derive from the 1970's. Understandably,
after 1990 they acquired a new value and grew in intensity.
The city council and city board of the first term owe much to these contacts. Contacts and cooperation are flourishing in many fields.
The once frequent exchanges of city delegations have given away to more intensified cooperation in science and culture.
Joint scientific seminars, lectures, exchange programs for students, journalists sportsmen, and school children
as well as professional training for government representatives, policemen and health service employees
form permanent elements of cooperation.
Most of them refer directly to the people involved without or with only slight participation of city authorities. Self-governing businesses
maintain economic ties with other countries. The city authorities have only a limited capacity to stimulate them.
Naturally, the possibility of exchanging experience in regards to the municipal economy remains very valuable.
Cooperation with European Community institutions is developing well.
The nongovernmental organizations that distribute means of support. Various private businesses and institutions of higher education
in Rzeszów have already profited from their help.
